- 1). Obtain a bachelor's degree. There are no formal educational requirements for underwriters. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics points out that many employers may prefer underwriters with a college education. Degrees with an emphasis on general business, property management or real estate law may be helpful.
- 2). Work in the insurance industry. If you are an entry-level employee, you will not be placed in an underwriting position right away. However, any position in the industry will get you started, allowing you to understand how the insurance industry operates and what the responsibilities of an underwriter are. Many underwriters receive on-the-job training by becoming assistant underwriters and shadowing senior underwriters.
- 3). Enroll in and complete the CPCU program offered by the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters. Courses are taught in the classroom or online. The cost of each CPCU training class is $325, and there are a total of eight courses required to complete the CPCU program. Each course requires its own exam and fee, and prices range between $200 and $300.
- 1). Obtain CPCU certification. Once you successfully complete the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters training program, you can register to claim the CPCU designation. Registration requires the completed CPCU program, an ethics test, a matriculation fee of $75 and a completed work experience form listing 24 months of work experience in the insurance field within five years.
- 2). Apply as an instructor at a school teaching CPCU courses. The AICPCU refers to schools teaching the CPCU program as course sponsors, while instructors are course leaders. Each sponsor hires its own CPCU instructors. Most instructors are working in the field of insurance, have a CPCU designation and at least five years or more of experience as a property underwriter.
- 3). Join the CPCU Society. The CPCU Society is an easy way for schools and institutions offering CPCU courses to find qualified CPCU instructors. You can apply as a full member or as a candidate member. Full members hold the CPCU designation, and candidate members are in the process of earning the CPCU designation. Full membership dues are $190 a year. Candidate membership dues are $95 a year. The society provides a career center and job network to its members.
