One such group is the Chi Eta Phi sorority, which administers the Mabel Keaton Staupers National Scholarship Award. This scholarship is only available to Chi Eta Phi members who are also members of the American Nursing Association.
Another nursing sorority that provides grant money to its members is Lambda Pi Alpha. The sorority's Beta Mu Chapter in Chicago, Illinois, selects one candidate to receive $1,500 every year. Applicants must be nursing students with a B average at an accredited school. - Certain nursing schools provide grant money to their students. The Division of Nursing at Howard University, for instance, offers a scholarships to disadvantaged students. Located in Washington, D.C., Howard University is a historically black institution that has educated black Americans since 1867.
The university's black nursing students can take advantage of the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students, which are only available to American citizens and permanent residents. Candidates can be either part-time or full-time students and must demonstrate financial need. - Money for nursing school can be obtained from city-specific organizations such as the San Diego Black Nurses Association (SDBNA), which was created in 1976 and works with black nursing professionals and students.
The organization's SDBNA Scholarship is open to members pursuing one of the following: a licensed vocational nurses degree, a registered nurse degree or a graduate nursing degree. At a minimum, applicants must have a C grade average. - Black nursing professionals have organizations that provide money to black nursing students. The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) was created to support and advocate on behalf of professional black nurses.
Established in 1971, the organization provides between $500 and $2,000 to selected black nursing students each year. To qualify, applicants must be NBNA-members and enrolled in a nursing program. They must also have at least one more year of nursing school to complete.
