- 1). Clean the plywood completely of old glue or other substances using a piece of medium grit sandpaper. Dust off all debris and sanding dust.
- 2). Spread tile adhesive on the top of the counter using a trowel. Begin setting whole tiles into the adhesive. Press firmly to set the tiles in place. Use the trowel to pick up any adhesive that squeezes out from underneath the tiles. Use spacers between the tiles.
- 3). Cut partial tiles to be placed next to sinks, walls or any other items that require cut tiles. Place the tile in its intended location and mark the tile with a permanent marker where the tile need to be cut. Spread adhesive on the back of the cut tiles. Press them firmly into place on the counter.
- 4). Measure the front and side edge tiles. Line the front tiles up with a tile directly next to it on the top of the counter. Cut the edge tiles.
- 5). Spread tile adhesive on the front and sides of the counter. Place the edge tiles using spacers to keep the tiles evenly spaced. Run a piece of tape across the edge tiles to keep them from slipping. Allow the adhesive to dry overnight.
- 6). Spread grout across the top of the counter with a grout float. Run the grout and the grout float back and forth across the counter, making sure that the grout is compacted between the tiles and free of air pockets.
- 7). Wipe away all the excess grout from the tops of the tiles using a sponge dipped in clean water. Allow the grout to dry.
