- Minnesota county governments offer assistance programs to bring emergency relief to residents. Income restrictions can vary among counties. In some cases, there may be no income requirements for emergency aid. For example, the Hennepin County Emergency Assistance Program provides assistance to families with minor children. Assistance covers emergency repairs and payments. The Minnesota Administration of Children and Families website offers a list of contact information for local county agencies and organizations.
- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps pay home heating costs. The households with highest energy bills and lowest incomes receive the largest amount of assistance through the program. To be eligible, your household size must be have an income below 50 percent of the state median income. In 2011, the maximum income for a family of three is $36,540. Prepare to provide proof of earnings for the past three months.
- The Department of Economic Security's Energy Program Unit administers the annual Reach Out for Warmth program. Over 40 charities and assistance agencies across the state receive funding to help Minnesota residents in need. To be eligible for the program, household income must be below 60 percent of the state median income. You must also suffer an energy emergency, such as a disconnection notice due, resulting from a loss of income. Applicants who are approved for the program, may also qualify for an additional $300 towards energy related repairs limited to the heating system.
- The Salvation Army's year-round HeatShare program is funded by contributions from the community and local energy companies. The program awards cash grants to residents who need help covering heating, natural gas, propane, oil and electricity bills. The program also covers emergency furnace repairs. Assistance is awarded on a need basis, with elderly and disabled given top priority. To apply for assistance, contact your local Salvation Army.
