Khao Sok is an absolutely stunning National Park in Southern Thailand. It is packed with tropical vegetation and exciting diverse wildlife and at the heart of it lies a beautiful vast lake surrounded by huge limestone cliff edges that also pop up out of the lake at surprising intervals. The scenery is breathtaking and awe inspiring; you will feel like you have been transported to the land of the giants.
The rain forest covered plains of the national park are dense with interesting flowers, plants and wild herbs. Khao Sok is one of the few places in Thailand where you will find the enormous Rafflesia flower, or in Thai the flower is called Bua Phut. The flower only lasts for one week, in this time it exudes the rancid smell of rotten meat. According to some locals from the National Park the Rafflesia flower boasts medicinal qualities which can help back ache and fevers. Although western medicinal practitioners dispute this fact.
The jungle is also home to some rare wildlife. Rumour suggests that Tigers still inhabit the rainforest, creeping about the jungle floor seeking prey and shelter. Elephants are another species that patrol the vegetation lined Khao Sok park. Chances of seeing either the tigers or elephants are slim, although some lucky visitors might be privy to an elephant dining on banana leaves in the distance. Other animals of interest and in plentiful supply are hornbills, gibbons and wild boar. These animals are shy and recluse, but sightings are frequent if you're quiet and patient.
A voyage out onto the lake is essential when visiting Khao Sok National Park. The lake is peaceful, except for the loud droning propellers onboard the long tail boats that populate the water. It is an expansive area of water, created by a dam in the early 1980's. The dam flooded villages which still remain beneath the water's surface; unpopulated except for cat fish, rhino fish and fresh water stingrays who navigate the murky waters, remaining elusive to human visitors.
Khao Sok National Park is a spectacular location showcasing all elements of the Earth at their very finest. The lake is an intriguing and spectacular destination; it is calm yet dramatic and serene yet full of the loud sounds of nature. The National Park itself is a true tropical adventure paradise, full to the brim with fascinating flora and fauna waiting to be discovered and admired. Khao Sok National Park is the true gem of Southern Thailand.
