- 1). Compare the insurance plans and premiums available in your New York county, which are available on the New York State website. Some carriers offer both health maintenance organization (HMO) and point-of-service (POS) options. POS plans allow you to seek out-of-network medical care; however, the premium may be higher.
- 2). Apply for a health plan through the insurance company you choose, using the contact information on the New York State website or the company's site. Remember to select a deductible level you are comfortable paying. Most insurance companies require your medical history for the last 10 years. List all of the medications you take and answer all of the questions. Not disclosing a medical condition may delay approval of your application.
- 3). Submit payment for your health insurance coverage. The insurance carrier will let you know which forms of payment are acceptable.
