How to Play D9 on Ukulele

    • 1). Learn a fairly easy version of D9. Press the G string behind the 2nd fret with your third finger. Press the C string behind the 4th fret with your fifth finger. Press the E string behind the 3rd fret with your fourth finger. Press the A at the 2nd fret with your second finger.

    • 2). Learn a second version. Press the G string behind the 5th fret with your third finger. Press the C string behind the 6th fret with your fourth finger. Press the E string behind the 5th fret with your second finger. Press the A string behind the 7th fret with your fifth finger.

    • 3). Learn an easy version of the D9 chord higher up the ukulele fretboard. Finger the G string behind the 11th fret with any finger you like and play the rest of the strings open.

    • 4). Learn the first chord, one octave up. Finger the chord in Step 1. Then slide your hand up the fret board without changing the positions of your fingers until you are fingering the 14th fret on the G and E strings. You should also be playing the C string at the 16th fret and the A at the 15th.

    • 5). Switch between the chords until you can do it fluidly.

    • 1). Learn the easiest D9 chord. Place your index finger behind the 4th fret of the D string and bar the other three strings at the 5th fret. Use whatever finger feels comfortable for the bar.

    • 2). Learn a second D dominant 9th ukulele chord. Place your index finger behind the 4th fret of D. Then, press the 2nd fret of G with your middle finger. Finally, press the first fret of B with your ring finger. Play all four strings, including the open E.

    • 3). Learn a third D9 chord. Place your middle finger behind the 7th fret of D. Press your index finger behind the 5th fret of G. Press your ring finger behind the 7th fret of B. Play the E open.

    • 4). Try one more version out. Put your index finger behind the 7th fret of D. Then, put your ring finger behind the 9th fret of G. Put your middle finger behind the 7th fret of B. Finally, put your pinky behind the 8th fret of E.

    • 5). Practice going between the chords until it becomes easy and fluid.
