How to Pot a Plant

You will need:
  • Container for your plant
  • Small rocks
  • Soil
  • Soil additive
  • Bucket for potting mix
  • Gardening gloves
Choose a container that is approximately 3 times larger than the root ball of the plant to allow for growth.
Make sure that the container is able to drain water from the bottom; if not, drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the container.
This is an important step, as water stagnating in the bottom of the container can cause the roots to rot.
Place small rocks at the bottom of the container, as this will also help with drainage.
1 to 2 inches of rocks should be sufficient.
Make a potting soil mix with dirt and an additive for aeration (plant roots need air, too!).
Some additives to consider are peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite.
A good mix is about 2/3 soil and 1/3 additive.
Pre-mixed potting soil can be found at stores that supply gardening products such as Lowe's, Home Depot, or Wal-Mart, to name a few, or a local garden supply center/nursery.
Pour the potting soil mix into the container up to the point where the root ball of the plant rests on the soil and the stem(s) of the plant are even with the top of the container.
Press down on the potting soil mix to pack down the soil and recheck the placement of the plant; add more soil if needed.
Holding the plant gently by the stem(s), place the root ball in the center of the container and pour the potting soil mix around the root ball, packing down the soil around the roots as you go until the soil is about even with the stem(s).
Place the plant in a place where it can receive adequate sunlight.
