- 1). Punch several small holes into the bottom of a coffee can using a nail and a hammer. Place the can in a bowl.
- 2). Place a one-inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the can. Place a ½ inch layer of clay over the gravel. Place a second one-inch layer of gravel over the clay.
- 3). Fill the can with water and allow it to sit overnight. Check the can the following morning. If the bowl does not have any standing water, than that clay barrier is effective and will work in your pond. If the can leaked, then the clay is not thick enough to create a barrier in your pond. You may need to try a different thickness of clay or try a different liner material.
