- 1). Use a measuring tape to measure the depth of the notch you plan to cut into your transom, and mark the depth of the outboard side (the side farthest from the center line of the boat) of the notch onto the transom with a dry-erase marker or grease pencil.
- 2). Use a carpenter's level to draw a horizontal line from the mark indicating the depth of the notch, toward the center line of the boat. Use a carpenter's square to make a square corner and a vertical line, from the horizontal line at the mark for the depth of the notch to the top of the transom.
- 3). Measure the width of the notch along the horizontal line and use the carpenter's square to make a second square corner, at the width of the notch, with the vertical component of the square corner extending to the top of the transom.
- 4). Use a reciprocating saw to cut the notch out. Mix the resin and hardener for marine epoxy resin. Apply a coat of marine epoxy resin to the cut edges and surfaces of the notch with a paintbrush.
- 5). Cut a sheet of fiberglass cloth to fit over the bottom and sides of the notch. Lay the fiberglass cloth in place on the resin and use the putty knife to work it into the resin. Apply another coat of resin. Allow the resin to cure and, when the resin has cured completely, sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper and a palm sander. Wipe the surface with a clean rag dipped in acetone to remove any sanding dust and paint the notch.
