Walks in the Hampshire New Forest

Hampshire's wonderland, the New Forest is home to some of the most beautiful and picturesque scenery in the UK. Located in the South West of Hampshire between Southampton and Bournemouth, the New Forest is a haven for anyone looking for outstanding natural beauty.

The most popular activity and reason for anyone visiting the New Forest is for walking. Anyone visiting, whether for a holiday, a weekend away, a day break or just visiting the beautiful market towns and idyllic villages will engage in one of the many walks the New Forest has to offer.

This area is home to some of the most outstanding walks suitable for anyone from the dog walker to the seasoned rambler. Woodland, grassy plains or wetlands the New Forest has a lot of different landscapes to explore for anyone looking to see this wonderful place close up. There's a variety of different walks, here are a few of the best ones for range of different walkers:

Long Distance Walks:

The Solent Way - Starting from the seaside town of Milford-on-sea, this 60 mile long walk will take you along the coast, through the New Forest and finish at Emsworth Harbour. Perfect to soak up the atmosphere of lively seafronts and quaint yachting harbours.

Castleman Trailway - Starting in Ringwood, Hampshire and ending in Poole, Dorset; this 16.5 mile long walk takes you through some stunning landscapes and follows much of the old Southampton to Dorchester railway line. Perfect to see diverse landscapes, such as heathland, rivers and forests.

Mid Distance Walks:

Ashley Walk - This 6 mile long walk will take approximately 3 hours to complete and is a popular one amongst lovers of the New Forest. Varying landscapes of woodland, forest and heathland this walk also takes you to the perimeter of a site used in World War II, and is ideal for any budding historian.

Fritham Walk - An incredibly popular walk in the New Forest, this 4 ½ mile long walk will take 2 ½ hours to complete. This walk has everything, varying landscapes, opportunities for deer spotting, idyllic villages and even a view familiar to film buffs as a section was used in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Suitable for anyone, and Movie lovers.

Short Distance Walks:

Slufters Inclosure Walk - Located in the North West of the Forest this lovely short walk is 2 miles long and takes approximately 1 ½ hours. This walk offers outstanding views of open heathland and forestry commissioned forests, also keep an eye out for deer grazing on the grass or hiding in the trees.

Acres Down - Also located in the north of the New Forest this 2 ½ mile long walk will approximately take 1 hour. Charming villages, country pubs, and picturesque scenery through woodland and forests make this walk what it is, perfect.
