In January, current Governor Matt Blunt made the surprise announcement that he would not seek re-election. The announcement opened the door to a competitive GOP primary and means the likely Democratic candidate, Jay Nixon, must wait to find out who he'll face in the November general election.
Both the Democratic and Republican primary elections will be held on August 5th. There are three candidates on the Democratic ticket, although Jay Nixon is considered a virtual lock for the nomination.
Things will likely be a bit more competitive in the GOP primary, with U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof facing off against Missouri State Treasurer Sarah Steelman. There are also three other Republican candidates, but Hulshof and Steelman are considered the two top favorites.
