Mature Modelling: Advice For The Over 40"s

If you've dreamed of gracing the catwalk since you were a little girl, the dream doesn't have to be over just because you're in your 40's.
For such a long time, teeny-boppers have dominated the industry, grabbing all the modelling contracts, campaigns and designers attentions.
But models no longer have to retire at the tender age of 25, because it has now been discovered that 40 is fabulous.
50 is fabulous.
Even 60 is fabulous.
More and more agencies and designers are on the look out for a more sophisticated, classic muse.
Why? Because that's their customer.
It is more than likely that an 18 year old is not going to splash out on couture gowns and perfectly sculpted, thousand pound shoes, so why use them advertise? Celebrities in their 40's are now gracing every single fashion magazine that you open.
You'll find pop goddess Madonna pulling leg extensions, dolled up in Louis V, supermodel Helena Christensen belted up in her pirate gear, zested with Agent P and screen angel Jerry Hall showing off her amazing body, whilst frosted in Channel.
Could it finally be your turn? With careful planning and fistfuls of determination, why not? If you're thinking about starting a career in modelling, then you obviously believe that you have the right look to do so, but make sure you really stand out.
Find a hairstyle that best accentuates your features.
If you've gone grey, but are comfortable and make it look glamorous, then don't feel that you need to dye it.
Look at Roxanne Gould.
Signed to one of the UK's leading modelling agencies, in her 50's, known and loved for always looking radiantly, fabulous under those salt and pepper locks.
Further, don't think that you need to cut your hair off either.
If it brings out your features and makes you look more striking, then great, but if you have good hair, then keep it.
Also, try to find the most flattering make-up brands and styles for your look.
I would suggest visiting the counters of higher-end brands like Deor and Channel and have one of their consultants guide you.
If you haven't had any modelling experience what-so-ever, you might want to think about hiring a model coach or signing up to a modelling school.
You might need 3 sessions, you might need 10, but a model coach can teach you everything from walking the runway, to poses that suit your face, height and physique and even the clothing styles and brands that will turn your potential up a notch.
Let them know your age and that you are just starting out, to make sure they set you up with the coach who has the most experience in your area of modelling.
You should also get some professional images to promote yourself.
Find a photographer who has extensive experience in fashion photography.
Use these images to build a portfolio, a comp card and maybe even a website with your contact details.
You can also register with online modelling communities and then direct any interest towards your online modelling profiles.
Many agencies also now have divisions for models aged 40 and over, so do your research and contact the best ones, letting them know your availability.
Make sure that you are open to a variety of modelling styles, such as runways, beauty, magazine jobs, TV adverts etc.
This will let them know that you are open and versatile and will attract them more.
