- People who have a natural affinity for machines and mechanical processes make good boiler attendants because they can envision how the boiler works. Training is still required, but a mechanical education may be lost on someone who has no mechanical ability, while an individual with natural aptitude will benefit from it.
- Boiler attendants require training in the particular machines they are working with, and can also benefit from more general education such as a degree in mechanical engineering. A generalized knowledge of the basic functions of boilers and how they relate to larger systems makes training in a particular unit much easier. Boiler attendants who are well educated and thoroughly trained in the functions of a boiler can more effectively troubleshoot problems in an emergency situation.
- Boiler attendants need to be reliable, level headed and able to do their jobs with little supervision. Because boilers involve high temperature water that is held under pressure, they can present a safety hazard if they are improperly maintained or neglected. Everyone in the area is dependent on the boiler attendant to ensure that the boiler is running properly and is safe. A broken down boiler could result in a lack of heat in a building, frozen pipes or, in extreme cases, even an explosion. All of these risks are minimized by an attendant who is conscientious and dependable.
- Some aspects of a boiler attendant's job require heavy lifting and working in small spaces or on ladders. An attendant needs to be fit and agile to do the job and avoid strain or injury. In some boiler set-ups, the room where the boiler is located can become very hot, so the attendant needs to be resistant to the strains of working in high temperatures.
