- People who have a natural affinity for machines and mechanical processes make good boiler attendants because they can envision how the boiler works. Training is still required, but a mechanical education may be lost on someone who has no mechanical ability, while an individual with natural aptitude will benefit from it.

A broken down boiler could result in a lack of heat in a building, frozen pipes or, in extreme cases, even an explosion. All of these risks are minimized by an attendant who is conscientious and dependable.
- Some aspects of a boiler attendant's job require heavy lifting and working in small spaces or on ladders. An attendant needs to be fit and agile to do the job and avoid strain or injury. In some boiler set-ups, the room where the boiler is located can become very hot, so the attendant needs to be resistant to the strains of working in high temperatures.
