Financial Help for Diabetics or Free Test Strips

    Medicaid and Medicare

    • Medicaid is a state and federal government program that helps needy individuals receive and pay for medical care and costs, including diabetic care and supplies. Qualifications and requirements for Medicaid vary from state to state, according to income and family size. To find out if you qualify, contact your state's local medical assistance department. Alternately, you can call a U.S government information number, 1-800-633-4227, that will direct you to your local department.

Medicare is a federally funded insurance program that is available to individuals age 65 and older. If you are under the age of 65, and have certain end-renal stage diseases such as kidney or liver failure, you may qualify as well. Medicare covers all diabetic supplies such as test strips, blood glucose meters and if needed, insulin. In most cases, Medicare will pay a certain amount of your medical expenses, with the remainder being paid by you out of pocket. To find out which Medicare program you may qualify for, contact the U.S. government's information line at 1-800-633-4227.

    Drug Companies

    • Several major drug companies that sell diabetic supplies such as insulin and test strips have set up assistance programs for needy individuals who otherwise could not afford them. In order to qualify, you will need to be referred through your physician. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturer of America offers details and information about assistance from various participating companies. Consult with your physician in regards to the application process and different assistance options available.

    Health Care Services

    • For individuals who do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicaid, the Bureau of Primary Health Care offers health care assistance, including diabetic care and supplies at local health care centers. If you do not have insurance, fees are based on the size of your family and your income. To find out specific information regarding details and locations of your local health centers, call the bureau's official national information line at 1-888-275-4772.
