One Republic Wakes Up

After the huge, internet-based success of One Republic's debut: Dreaming Out Loud, the band toured with Maroon 5 and Brandi Carlile while receiving a dozen or more movie and TV placements/performances of material from the album.
In September of 2008, the band reported that they were beginning work on new songs for an upcoming album.
While critics largely panned One Republic's first release and sound in general, fans began to buzz with the news, and speculation ran rampant as the band performed the new 'All The Right Moves' song live.
Releasing the Waking Up album in November of 2009, the band released singles including 'All the Right Moves', 'Secrets' and 'Marchin On'.
With more TV and movie placements, fans continued to flock to the band and its sound, drawing from the big pop sounds of the 80s with big drums, soaring vocals and pumped-up, anthemic choruses.
Critics continued to label the sound as derivative, and while the album sold on 200,000 copies in the US, singles from the album continued to propel the band forward.
As material from the album appeared on shows like 'Lost', 'Castle' and 'The Vampire Diaries' the band opened for Pink and Bon Jovi while hinting that a third release was in the works.
Another collaboration with Timbaland insued, as 'Marchin On' appeared on his Shock Value II album release.
While the band continued to support material from the new album, guitarist Zach Filkins tweeted: "We've been playing the songs on Waking Up for a while, and I think we are all beginning to feel like we are ready to have something new coming up.
" Singles from the album continued to add to the band's popularity as performances on the Today Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno continued to fuel fan fire for the band and its sound.
Still unapologetic for their 80s-driven sound, One Republic writes material that connects with fans, first and foremost.
While critics may hold certain disdain for the band and their homage to bands like Simple Minds, Big Country, Roxy Music and others, even Rolling Stone is quick to add that One Republic is a band to watch for the future of pop music.
In the end, Ryan Tedder (lead singer and songwriting collaborator with Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Rhianna and others) and company know the power of big melodies and timeless hooks.
That is a formula that stays in the minds of fans far longer than the names of music critics or the magazines they write for.
