The Singapore Philatelic Museum, located along Coleman Street, is for more than just stamp lovers. The building, which was once part of the Anglo-Chinese School and later the Methodists Book Room, was completed in 1906. It was only in 1995 that it came to be used as a Philatelic Museum. The exhibits focus on the stamps and postal history of Singapore, and aims to increase appreciation of the nation's culture and heritage through its stamps. In addition to permanent galleries, the museum also features an ever changing roster of exhibits.
The permanent gallery features five exhibits. The Orange Room eases visitors into the world of philately which is the study of stamps. Tracing the history, culture and technology behind stamps, visitors will also find here, stamps made out of unusual material and the ‘talking' Penny Black. The Purple Room takes visitors on a journey through the process of stamp making, from conceptualisation to print to circulation. The exhibit also has antique equipment formerly used in making stamps. The Green Room introduces visitors to the joys of stamp collecting. Here, one can learn about famous philatelists and see a complete collection of Singaporean stamps issued since the country gained independence.
The treasures of the museum are housed in the Room of Rarities. Displaying many rare stamps, one of the stars of the exhibit is the only cover in the world containing all the 1854 Indian Stamps used in the Straits Settlement. The Heritage Room traces the origins of the various migrant races that comprise Singapore's colourful and culturally diverse population.
Among the current non-permanent galleries is Message Me, an exploration of the development of communication through the ages and Bunny Wonderland; aimed at young visitors, the interactive display will teach visitors things they never knew about these furry little creatures. The Adventures of Tintin is an exhibit that will open in November 2011 and will focus on the beloved comic book character.
The museum, as with many of the country's attractions, can be reached by the MRT transport system, which is something to keep in mind when looking for accommodation. In recent times, serviced apartments Singapore have become a preferred choice of lodging. Tourists who do not want to forgo the comforts of home should definitely consider a Singapore serviced apartment. La Residenza Serviced Suites offer all the amenities found in a hotel and couples it with the style and comfort of a home, making it an ideal choice of accommodation.
