When starting your own little home based business working from home can be a daunting task especially if you have always worked for a boss or a large company.
You will want to have set work hours but will also have to be able to communicate with your family about home matters as they come to hand. This can be done in a number of ways, firstly you could have an intercom so that your wife or small children or other family members could call you if they really have to interrupt you about something important. Another way would be by setting up a personal email account so you can see any messages from them while you are still doing tasks and respond to them with out having to leave your office. Get them to send you a short text message on your phone is also another way of indirectly contacting you.
To be able to work successfully from home it's crucial to stay on task with out to many interruptions. You will need to be able separate your business time from home or family time. If you are doing Internet based work or some type of business delegating work you really need your own office or work space which is apart from the rest of the household. To operate properly a work from home business needs to be scheduled so you can concentrate on the jobs you most likely need to do. Then do the smaller jobs as your time dictates.
You will need to set up your office (or work space if you are making physical products) in a way similar to a real place of work.
Some real focus on health safety should be set into your planning and your work environment. Set times for regular breaks and meals so you don't get too tired to complete your tasks. Make sure you do house work up after jobs so that you can find your tools or paper work etc before you take initial steps to start the next task or job.
To keep in touch with your family so they do not feel like you are isolating them you will need to set up some tasks or chores they can do to aid you at regular times. Young people can be made to feel important if given the daily job of posting your mail or cleaning your work bench between jobs or any other tiny tasks they can manage which will also save you some time do do other things. Your wife or husband might feel necessary if allowed to bring in your morning tea at a set time and have a break with you. Once you have completed your daily work routine it is also essential for your health and family routine being to be able to disassociate your self from the office - work environment.
Set your answering machine to take messages and turn of your computer so you don't hear emails coming in. Have a different home and work phone number for your phones and only give your home number to clients if the matter is really urgent.
I hope that you enjoyed reading and some of my tips.
