Understanding And Appreciating Down Comforters

Understanding and appreciating down comforters is easy to do once one spends just a few minutes swaddled in one of the finer examples available for purchase out on the market these days. These comforters have a long and distinguished history, and the best of them are extremely well-made and very good at keeping people warm and comfortable on cold, snowy nights, for example.

Understanding a down comforter can also help someone considering purchasing one to decide on how much to spend and exactly what type to go for. Comforters come in many different sizes and cover materials, as well as prices. For example, an extremely high-quality version filled with the best kind of down can run over $1000, which isn't inexpensive, to tell the truth.

When it comes to the down material itself, understand that natural down is the fluffy material underneath the feathers of a bird. This material is usually found in clusters, and air is trapped within the pockets and spaces within this down, which acts as an insulating material that helps a bird maintain a constant body temperature.

Comforters are usually made from several different types of down, by the way. Duck down is usually the least expensive while the rarest and costliest is known as eiderdown, which comes from a female eider duck. Normally, this particular down is gathered from abandoned eider duck nests and it's -- by far -- the warmest of all such downs.

Down is often rated by what's called "fill power, " which is a measure of how much one ounce of down would take up within a specific number of cubic inches. The higher the number of cubic inches the greater the insulating capacity of the down itself. High quality down generally has a fill power of 700 or more, by the way.

When it comes to the coverings that keep down collected and enclosed within, they normally come in three different versions; gusset-edged, box stitched and baffle box. Most comforters feature a box stitched cover. This particular kind of cover works well because it keeps down where it's supposed to be within the cover and doesn't usually allow it to shift around and pool up in a corner, for example.

Down comforters are also assessed by their weight. Usually, they come in either light, medium or high-weight versions. Winter comforters are usually those that are high in weight. Generally speaking, a good down comforter that features a fill power of 700 or more would work extremely well in a bedroom that's only heated to around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember, also, that good comforters can cost several hundred dollars, at least.
