• Several studies have indicated that green tea might serve as a viable complement to more traditional treatments. For example, a study out of Japan found that patients suffering from ovarian sarcoma responded better to a combination of Adriamycin (a chemo drug) and green tea then patients who received Adriamycin alone. Additionally, researchers at the Mayo Clinic have concluded that green tea helps kill cancer cells related to leukemia.
  
  

How it Works

• The key to green tea's cancer-fighting abilities is the presence of EGCG, a particular type of catechin. Catechins act as antioxidants, which in turn promote the health of normal cells. Not only does this help prevent cancer, but in some instances may also help slow the progression of cancer once it has formed.
  
  

Considerations

• While the promising research related to green tea and cancer is promising, patients should always take such information with a grain of salt. As of yet, green tea has not been approved as a reliable treatment for any type of cancer. So, while drinking green tea may be a good idea for cancer patients, it should not be seen as the only necessary form of treatment. As always, consult a doctor before beginning any treatment regiment.
