- 1). Clean the boots thoroughly before you use them as planter. Combine a mild dishwashing soap with warm water, and clean the outside of the boots with a sponge.
- 2). Stuff a crumbled piece of newspaper into the toe of the boot to keep its shape. Loosen the shoe string of the boots to give you more room to plant.
- 3). Spray clear acrylic on the outside of the boots to help keep its shape. Apply three to four layers of the acrylic, and allow it to dry between each coating.
- 4). Place a potted plant into the opening of the boot. The potted plant need to be small enough to fit inside the boot. You can also plant the flowers directly into the boot, in which case you will need to prepare the boot properly.
- 1). Remove the insoles from inside the shoes.
- 2). Turn the shoes over. Clamp them down to hold them in place, and drill 4 to 5 holes in the bottom of the soles the size a nail head. Space them apart as evenly as possible to allow for adequate drainage.
- 3). Untie the shoelaces from the boot. Fill the shoe with potting soil and push it down into the foot of the shoe. Keep the soil loose in the rest of the boot.
- 4). Remove the flower or plant from the growing pot. Plant the root ball into a hole large enough to accommodate it, and press down the soil around it to keep the plant in place.
- 5). Water the plant to keep the soil moist.
