- 1). Prepare a planting site with a full sun to partial shade exposure. Plant the Brugmansia arborea in a location that receives direct sunlight in the morning and evening with shade in the afternoon in very hot climates.
- 2). Improve the soil before planting the B. arborea. Add organic matter such as leaf mold, compost and aged manure to improve fertility and texture. Add perlite and shredded tree bark mulch to clay soil for improved drainage. Mix the amendments into the soil with a dirt shovel or rototiller. Make sure they are thoroughly mixed into the top 10 to 12 inches of soil.
- 3). Plant the Brugmansia at the same depth it was growing in its container. Water it generously immediately after planting. Place a 2-inch depth of mulch around it, but do not place the mulch right up against the stems. Keep the mulch 1 to 2 inches away from the stems.
- 4). Water the Brugmansia in the morning once or twice per week as necessary throughout the spring, summer and fall. Do not allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but do not keep the soil muddy or soggy. Allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings in the winter.
- 5). Apply a water-soluble balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs once each week in the spring, summer and fall. A large, mature Brugmansia may need to be given fertilizer twice per week. Do not give it any fertilizer in the winter.
- 6). Prune the Brugmansia lightly in mid to late spring or late fall with hand pruners only if necessary. It does not require regular pruning. Remove dead or diseased branches and branches that are growing at odd or undesirable angles.
- 1). Plant the Brugmansia in a container with drainage holes in the bottom. The container can be either plastic or clay; however, plastic is recommended for larger plants. Large clay pots become very heavy and difficult to move. Use a plastic container if under-watering tends to be a problem and clay if over-watering is common. Plastic will retain moisture longer than clay.
- 2). Use a good potting mix that drains well. Peat-based or soil-based potting mix can be used. Make sure it contains perlite, vermiculite or sand for improved drainage.
- 3). Place the Brugmansia in the sunniest position possible where it will receive some direct sunlight. Water as often as necessary to keep the potting mix consistently moist during the spring, summer and fall. Give it a balanced fertilizer once per week. Reduce the watering frequency during the winter so that the top of the soil dries slightly between waterings, and do not fertilize.
- 4). Prune the Brugmansia in mid to late spring or late fall to tidy it up as necessary. This plant may be moved outdoors for the summer in cold-winter locations and brought back indoors in the fall. Prune it back in the fall just prior to bringing it indoors if needed to maintain a more manageable size.
