- NCLEX examination passing decisions are not based on the number or percentage of items answered correctly, as your regular nursing tests have been graded. There is no "grade" of 75 or 80 to achieve. Rather, passing the test depends upon how difficult the questions are that you can answer correctly, 50% of the time. Computerized adaptive technology asks test items with difficulty levels, such that each student will answer about half correctly. The difference between passing and failing is this: "Passing candidates answer 50% of more difficult items correctly, and failing candidates answer 50% of easier items correctly." After you have answered a minimum number of questions, the computer compares your estimated ability to pass and does one of three things: stops the test and passes you, stops the test and fails you, or continues to ask you questions until your status becomes apparent.
- Prior to taking the NCLEX, you will apply to your state board of nursing and pay and register with Pearson VUE, the company contracted to administer the test. In turn, you will receive an Eligibility Letter from the board and an Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE, which allows you to choose and register for a test site. Start and complete all this paperwork well ahead of your planned test date. Testing centers fill up quickly, and you need this time to study, not rush about trying to find a place to take the test.
- Know where you are headed before you leave to take the test. Pearson VUE recommends that you review the exam day procedure and the rules for taking the test. Arrive at the Pearson Professional Center a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the exam, with your ATT letter and a picture ID. Be prepared also to provide the following biometrics: your signature, photograph, palm vein scan and fingerprint.
The exams can take up to six hours for the RN test or five hours for the PN test, including orientation to the computer system and two optional breaks. At the end of your exam, you will take a short survey. Raise your hand and wait for the test proctor to dismiss you.
Even though the exam is graded as you answer each question, scores go through a second verification process and are not available at the test center. - If your state board of nursing is part of the Quick Results Service, you can receive your "unofficial" pass or fail notice 48 hours after the NCLEX on the Pearson website for $7.95 or by calling (900) 776-2539 for $9.95. If your state does not participate in this program or you chose not to find out your "unofficial" scores early, you will receive official notice of your test results through your state board of nursing about one month after examination.
