How to Fix a Hot Water Tank

    • 1). Turn off the switch that provides power to your hot water tank. Allow the water to cool for 45 minutes.

    • 2). Close the water inlet valve. Attach a garden hose to the water outlet valve, which is located at the base of your water tank. Open the water outlet valve to collect water into a large bucket or run the other end of the hose to a drainage area. Drain out all of the water to empty the water tank.

    • 3). Open the hot water faucet to allow air to pass through the tank.

    • 4). Turn the cold water outlet valve on and off to drain the sediments deposited in your water tank. Check if the water from the outlet valve drains clear or not. If the water is not clear, continue turning the outlet valve on and off. If the water appears clear to you, close the water outlet valve and the hot water faucet.

    • 5). Remove the garden hose attached to the water outlet valve.

    • 6). Open the cold water valve to refill your water tank. Turn on the power to your water tank.
