- If you are a disabled ACS member who has paid for the organization's group disability insurance, you have the right to claim benefits. The rules and regulations tied to these benefits do not vary depending on your state or city, but on the plan you chose when you decided to purchase the policy. The two options are Plan A and Plan B.
- If you chose to be on Plan A, you cannot receive benefits before the 31st day of your disability's onset. Once you reach the 31st day, the company starts paying benefits. If you chose to be on Plan B, you selected the minimum wait upon purchasing your policy. The choices Plan B offers are 30, 60, 90, 180 or 365 days. The longer the wait you selected, the lower your premiums are.
- If you chose Plan A, you can only receive disability benefits for up to 24 months from the moment you start receiving them. If you chose Plan B, you receive benefits until you reach 65 years of age, or for 24 months, whichever results in a longer benefit span.
- If you are disabled and 65 years of age or older, you must comply with the same rules and regulations for both plans. If you are disabled and 65 or older, you can only receive benefits until you reach your 70th birthday or for 24 months. In this case you only receive half of what you would receive if you were younger than age 65.
- If you are partially disabled, you can only receive benefits if you continue to work. You will start receiving benefits for your partial disability the first day you go back to work after your partial disability manifested.
- To qualify to receive permanent benefits or benefits for the duration stipulated by each plan, you must be totally disabled. Being totally disabled, according to the New York Life Insurance Company, means that you cannot perform any work or the work you previously did for the time before benefits start plus the next 60 months after your benefits have started.
- If you have self-inflicted injuries that caused your disability, you cannot receive benefits. Other regulations for which circumstances do not qualify you to receive benefits include a disability caused by serving in the Armed Forces, public transportation accidents, serving as a crew member in any type of aircraft and pregnancy, according to the New York Life Insurance Company.
