- 1). Observe the transparency of the caulk. Silicone caulk shades can vary but will have a clear or opaque look to them. Other types of caulk are usually more solid in appearance.
- 2). Observe if there are any cracks in the caulk. Silicone caulk is soft and rarely cracks over time, whereas other types of caulk become brittle over time and develop cracks.
- 3). Cut a small area of the caulk, using a sharp knife. If the caulk has a rubbery texture, it is silicone. Other types of caulk will have a harder texture.
- 4). Notice what the caulk is being used for. If it is in a bathtub or shower, odds are good that you are dealing with silicone caulk.
