Construction Careers & Job Information

    Nature of Work

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction workers can build houses, factories, apartments, schools, offices, roads, bridges and many other structures. They must be meticulous when planning a project to meet budget requirements and safety standards. Construction workers may also have to make modifications and additions to existing structures. Later in the process, they will have to maintain, repair and improve upon their own creations.

    Work Environment

    • Most construction workers work full-time, often more than 40 hours a week. In order to meet deadlines, some work will be required during nights, weekends and holidays. Nature plays a role in construction, as weather conditions can delay a project. The work requires standing, bending, stooping and heavy lifting. Workers need to be very careful when operating machinery and tools. Workers should wear gloves, hardhats and eye protection at all times to minimize their risk of injury.

    Training

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a worker can enter the field as a laborer, helper or apprentice if he has a high school diploma or GED. On-the-job training and classroom instruction helps to prepare a worker for serious skilled work. Workers obtain increased skills and knowledge through experience by working on numerous types of projects. The most marketable workers will have attained experience in a plethora of areas.

    Earnings

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for a construction worker was $21.87 in 2008. This equates to approximately $842 each week. Higher wages are paid to workers with more education and training, such as electricians. Alternatively, general laborers earn less money.

    Advancement

    • Construction workers with a proven track record of experience can earn greater wages and responsibilities. Educational prowess also aids in advancement. Some construction workers who demonstrate leadership qualities can become supervisors. Those with business savvy can open their own construction companies.
