Carmel, CA: Reverse Mortgage & Non Payment Of Taxes Causes Eviction Of 101 Year Old: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad CaliforniaI wrote a blog recently about a 101 year old woman who was evicted from her own home after living there for more than six decades. Thankfully, the story is going to have a happy ending. The Monterey Herald reported on September 19 that the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development agreed to allow the woman to return home after she leaves the hospital. The story, however, teaches us another lesson--it is possible to be evicted from your home after you take out a reverse mortgage if you can't keep up the taxes on it. That's what happened in this case. When the property taxes weren't paid for several years, the house was foreclosed on. Although reverse mortgages can be a life saver for some, if you start losing the ability to keep track of which bills need to be paid in your later years, much trouble can follow. At Family inHome Caregiving, some of our Clients have a CPA pay their bills for them, while others have put a relative in charge. If you make a decision like this, make sure it is someone responsible! In this case, the woman's son threw away the property tax bills and eviction notices, and the poor woman was totally unaware she was in financial trouble. It's prudent to get your financial affairs in order while you are young and know what you want to do.[http://www.montereyherald.com/local/ci_18927404http://www.familyinhomecaregiving.com/blog/index.html?entry=salinas-ca-101-year-oldAbout] Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies.
