Easter
Easter can be a pretty solemn affair. But it can be made fun with traditional baskets of candy, colored eggs and flowers, reminding everyone that it is a season of renewal. "Peter Cottontail," by Gene Autry, celebrates the Easter Bunny's role in creating springtime joy. You can follow it up with a more modern song, "Where'd You Hide My Easter Basket," by Nooshi the Balloon Dude from the album, "Easter Songs for Kids." The album also includes, "Two Baby Chicks," which is an Easter parody of the "Twelve Days of Christmas."
Halloween
Goblins and ghosties and things that go bump in the night aren't nearly as scary when you can sing silly songs about them. The "Monster Mash," originally recorded by Bobby Pickett, is a Halloween silly song staple, that could easily be followed up with "The Addams Family" theme song. Kids can have fun singing "The Ghost of John," with appropriate shivers. "Five Little Pumpkins" is a fun chant for small children, and is an easy one to add to a school program or for preschoolers to chant for grandparents.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is another holiday that can be pretty solemn. But serving up a big dinner for family and relatives in celebration of another year together is also an occasion for fun. Silly songs about pumpkins and turkeys can set the mood for a family get-together. "Albuquerque the Turkey" makes use of funny rhyming words for effect, and emphasizes that Albuquerque is a pet. "Five Little Turkeys" is a counting-out rhyme that acknowledges that Thanksgiving in America is a nervous time for turkeys. No list of Thanksgiving songs would be complete without "Over the River and Through the Woods," which, while not strictly silly, does have its funny parts.
Christmas
Christmas celebrations are a joyous time, so adding some laughter goes right along with the season. The commercial and gift-giving side of Christmas is often the subject for funny songs, such as "Three Pairs of Long Johns On," which describes how Santa Claus is saved from an embarrassing seam split by following Mrs. Claus' advice. "I'm Gettin' Nuttin' for Christmas" is a naughty child's acknowledgment of trouble, and "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" is adorable when sung by a bevy of 6-year-olds, who can be counted on to have shed some teeth recently. Music K-8's Theresa Jennings' original, "A Silly Holiday Song," is a crowd pleaser for school programs, or for family gatherings.
More Seasonal Songs
It is hard to find a time of year that doesn't have a song or two to go with it. Mother's Day is lovingly commemorated in "The Mother's Day Song," by Bryant Oden, which lists a number of mishaps created while trying to please mother. And to wrap it all up, there is "The Holiday Theme" from Dancing Leaf, accompanied by a cute video of a family packing up for a holiday, having fun and returning home.
