1. Indiana Review "1/2 K" Prize


A prize of $1,000 and publication in Indiana Review is given annually for a poem or a work of flash fiction or nonfiction of up to 500 words. Kim Chinquee will judge. Submit up to three poems or pieces of fiction or nonfiction of up to 500 words each. 

To Submit:
  • Send up to 3 pieces of up to 500 words each per submission (fiction/nonfiction/poetry/hybrid genre all welcome). A single submission should not exceed 8 pages.
  • As of September 2014 we no longer accept hard-copy submissions.
  • Entrant’s name must not appear on the submission.
  • Cover letter must include name, address, phone number, and title. Entrant’s name should appear ONLY in the cover letter.
  • Each fee entitles entrant to a single issue of the journal. International addresses, please add $12 for postage ($7 for addresses in Canada).
  • Be sure to select the genre “2015 1/2K Prize” on the submission form.
  • Entries submitted before the opening date or after the deadline will not be considered.

  • The winner of our contest will receive $1,000 and publication in The Indiana Review.
  • All entries are considered for publication.
  • All entries are considered anonymously.
  • Previously published works and works forthcoming elsewhere cannot be considered.
  • Simultaneous submissions are okay, but the entry fee is non-refundable if the submitted work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Multiple entries are okay, as long as a separate reading fee is included with each entry.
  • Further, IR cannot consider work from anyone currently or recently affiliated with Indiana University or the prize judge.

2. 25th Southern Writers Symposium–Emerging Writers Contest


Entries are now being accepted for the 2015 Southern Writers Symposium Emerging Writers Contest. This year categories will feature fiction and poetry.

The first-place writer in each category will be invited to read from his or her winning work at the conference and receive a cash award of $400. Second place writers will receive $300. All winners will be invited to attend the Symposium. 

Entries submitted via snail mail should include a cover sheet with the author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, title, and genre of work submitted as well as a brief bio and statement that the author meets the eligibility guidelines. The author’s name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript or the manuscript will be disqualified. These entries should be mailed to Southern Writers Symposium, Emerging Writers Contest, Department of English and Writing, Methodist University, 5400 Ramsey St., Fayetteville NC 28311. 

Entries may also be submitted here.

Winners will be announced on the Southern Writers Symposium Website by September 19, 2015, so an SASE is unnecessary. Entries will not be critiqued or returned; paper entries will be recycled.

3. Brighthorse Book Prize


The Brighthorse Book Prize, now in its second year, is an annual awards series honoring unpublished novels, collections of short fiction and poetry collections. Three prizes will be given in 2015. Authors writing in English—regardless of nationality, residence or publication history—may submit to the competition. Winning manuscripts will be published by Brighthorse Books. A $1,000 prize and publication will be offered to one writer in each category. The editors reserve the right to offer to publish any manuscripts submitted to the competition in addition to the prize winners.

4. New Guard Fiction Contest


Two prizes of $1,500 each and publication in New Guard are given annually to a short story or novel excerpt. Adam Braver will judge the Machigonne Fiction Contest. Adam Braver is the author of Mr. Lincoln’s Wars, Divine Sarah, Crows Over the Wheatfield, November 22, 1963, and Misfit. His books have been selected for the Barnes and Noble Discover New Writers program, Border’s Original Voices series, the IndieNext list, and twice for the Book Sense list; as well as having been translated into Italian, Japanese, Turkish, and French. His work has appeared in journals such as Daedalus, Ontario Review, Cimarron Review, Water-Stone Review, Harvard Review, Tin House, West Branch, The Normal School, and Post Road. He is on faculty and writer-in-residence at Roger Williams University, and teaches at the NY State Summer Writers Institute. He lives in Rhode Island.

Using the online submission system, submit no more than 5,000 words of prose.
