How to Determine a Balance on a Debit Card

    • 1). Look up your debit card balance before leaving on your trip. You need to know a starting point of how much money you have in your account. Write this information down in a checkbook or notepad. Put it somewhere safe so you can monitor your spending.

    • 2). Hold onto all of the receipts you receive from the purchases you make in a given day. At the end of the day add up all the purchases and subtract the information from your total balance. This gives you the current balance in your debit card.

    • 3). Read all fine print when using an ATM. More than likely, you are charged a usage fee for using an ATM not associated with your bank. Write down the usage fee on the receipt from the ATM once you have finished your transaction.

    • 4). Subtract the ATM withdrawal and usage fee from your total amount to determine your current balance on the card.
