Amritsar, literally means the "holy pool of nectar", is one of the most ancient and awe-inspiring cities of India. Home to the Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple is an important seat of Sikh history and culture. Sikh people from various places come to this pilgrimage center and take a dip in holy tank of the temple which is considered very auspicious. There is such a spiritual embodiment of the higher being that even the non believer is seduced by the hypnotic melody of the Paath. The place is remembered for the massacre that happened during the British rule in India. 379 people died and more than 1200 people were injured in this massacre. On 13 April 1919, pilgrims had gathered there to celebrate the Baisakhi festival, and protest against the British rule. General Dyer was the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in 1919, who ordered the British forces to open fire on the people. Visitors also like to visit the Wagah Border, the international border between India and Pakistan. The pomp and pageantry of the Beating Retreat and the Change of Guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces makes for a most charming spectacle. The beautiful Ram Bagh is another place that demands a visit. Named after the founder of this city, Guru Ram Das, this garden houses a museum in the summer palace constructed by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh. One can find old weapons of Mughal era and few portraits of the rulers of the Punjab. It is interesting to note that this museum amongst other artefacts, also exhibits a replica of the diamond 'Kohinoor'. Other places to see include the Ram Thirth which is a temple of Hindus and it is said that it was here that Sita Mata was given shelter by Sage Valmiki, when her husband Ram had abandoned her. It is at this place that Sita Ma gave birth to the twins Lav- Kush. Another religious place to visit is the Durgiana Mandir, located close to the Golden Temple. This temple is architecturally similar to the Golden Temple and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga along with Lakshmi and Narayana.
