Kids Halloween Movies: Choices for Tweens
Coraline
The problem with most Halloween movies as that they're either too scary or too timid for the tween age group.
Coraline, which came out in theaters in 2009, is a good choice for the preteen set as it offers up a healthy dose of creepy, without any gore or real violence. The movie can be found in both 2-D and 3-D versions. The plot involves a little girl, Coraline, who discovers an alternative world, complete with "other" parents and friends. All seems great until Coraline's "other" Mother insist that she stay and never return to her real world. This kids Halloween movie is from the same director as The Nightmare Before Christmas, and has a very similar feel to it. Rated PG, Focus Features
Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone
A list of kids Halloween movies wouldn't be complete without the mention of Harry Potter, an orphaned wizard-in-training at Hogwart's Academy. Harry and his friends encounter danger, magic, and form lasting bonds of friendship, all while learning the ins and outs of wizardry. Quidditch, anyone? Rated PG, Warner Brothers
Escape to Witch Mountain
If you're looking for a kids Halloween movie from your own childhood, or for something a little different, the original Escape to Witch Mountain might be a fun choice.
In this movie, two sibling orphans, Tony and Tia, use their psychic powers to escape the reach of a villainous millionaire who wants to exploit them. Together, and with the help of an aged-widower, they try to return to Witch Mountain, and find the family they've been looking for. The remake from 2009, Race to Witch Mountain, is also a fun choice. Rated G, Walt Disney Pictures
Halloweentown
This kids Halloween movie came out in 1998 and tells the story of 13-year-old Marnie. Marnie discovers, quite by accident, that she comes from a long line of witches. When she sets out to investigate, she ends up in Halloweentown, a place where witches, warlocks, ghosts and goblins live together, but not always in peace. Debbie Reynolds plays her grandmother, also a witch. Several sequels followed, but this version is the best. Rated PG, Walt Disney Pictures
Monster House
The villain of this kids Halloween movie is a house, no less, and a very creepy house at that. This animated movie comes from the talents of Robert Zemeckis and Stephen Spielberg, and tells the story of the kids who dare to take on a terrifying neighborhood house. Rated PG, Sony Pictures
The Haunted Mansion
Eddie Murphy stars as a real estate agent and a neglectful father who, with the help of his family and a psychic, attempts to rid Gracey Manor of 999 ghosts. A few scary scenes and several humorous ones make it appealing to tweens and older children. Rated PG, Walt Disney Pictures
