- 1). Draw a grid of evenly spaced vertical and horizontal lines over the area where the harlequin pattern will be painted. Place the vertical lines closer together and the horizontal lines farther apart. The farther away the horizontal lines are to each other and the closer the vertical lines are to each other, the more narrow your diamond pattern will be. Draw this grid on whatever surface you will be using for the harlequin pattern.
- 2). Draw a diamond in each rectangle on the grid. Use your ruler to make straight lines. The diamond will be centered exactly over the rectangle so that the top of the diamond touches the top of the rectangle in the exact center, the bottom of the diamond touches the bottom of the rectangle in the exact center, and each side of the diamond touches the corresponding side of the rectangle in the center.
- 3). Repeat Step 2 for each rectangle in the grid. The tips of each diamond should touch the tips of the diamond directly beside it.
- 4). Paint each diamond. Although it doesn't matter which paint color you choose, you need to paint each diamond the same color.
- 5). Paint the negative space in between the diamonds, using the second paint color. You have just painted a harlequin pattern.
