- Working as a telephone triage representative might be a good option for you. A telephone triage representative takes inbound calls for those patients who are trying to reach their primary doctor. Sometimes the call isn't urgent enough for the patient to call 911, but he still needs medical advice. Your responsibility will be to assess the patient's needs and make your best assessment over the telephone as to whether this is an emergency.
Another telephone position is a general health advice practitioner. You will need to have an active RN in most cases to land one of these roles, but it can be very rewarding especially if you enjoy helping people and giving advice. Insurance companies need specialists on staff who can guide callers and help them in making the correct decisions regarding their health. - Some work-from-home nursing jobs allow you to have a home office but you meet your clients at their location. A case manager is a good example of this type of position. Working as a case manager might be a good choice for you if you do not want to be confined to your home all day. While you operate out of your home office, this job requires that you get out and meet patients and other key personnel. Having a mobile office set-up in your vehicle with a mobile phone and rolling file storage bin is ideal. Serving as an advocate for the patient is one of the key responsibilities for this role. If you do not mind getting out and driving around, then this might be the best choice for you.
- Becoming a clinical administration nurse will also require that you have an active RN. Your main duty will be to perform clinical reviews for adherence to clinical standards. Some of the other responsibilities might include observing coding practices, communicating with physicians, researching issues for the purpose of reducing risk, and identifying any quality issues. Keep in mind all of this can be done from the comfort of your home.
- In order to work remotely as a nurse there are some basic requirements that most employers are looking for. Probably the best credential to have is the Registered Nurse certification (RN). This is a must-have in most of the cases. Another strong preference would be to have three to five years' working in a hospital environment or a general practitioner's office.
- How you know which opportunity is right for you largely depends upon your personality type. If you enjoy the phone and do not need daily, physical interaction with others then a phone-oriented nursing job would be your best option. However, if you enjoy being a busybody and like to be on the go, then operating as a case manager would be your best bet. The greatest part is that you do have options, and health care entities are seeking knowledgeable nurses who desire to work from home.
