- The Port Authority was established in 1921 to administer the common interests of New Jersey and New York in regards to the shared harbor region. One of the first tasks was to construct bridges and tunnels uniting the two states. On a normal day, over 200,000 people and 7,200 buses use the busy bus complex.
- Major bus lines that operate out of the Port Authority include Greyhound, Grayline, Olympia Trails, Bonanza, New Jersey Transit, Susquehanna, Shortlines, Suburban Trails and Peter Pan Lines.
- Common regional destinations from the Port Authority include the Meadowlands Sports Complex, Atlantic City, Foxwoods Casino, Long Island and upstate New York. A second bus terminal, George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal, is convenient for those commuters traveling from northern New Jersey and Rockland County, New York.
