- Vitamin C and beta carotene assist the lungs in fighting off respiratory disease. They help reduce swelling and inflammation. Look for vitamin C and beta carotene in foods like oranges, broccoli, squash, citrus juice and Brussels sprouts.
- Vitamin E is often used in oil form, but should not be consumed as a food. Look for high amounts of vitamin E in wheat germ, sunflower seeds, kale and almonds. Sprinkle wheat germ on cereal or add it to baked goods to increase consumption. Vitamin E helps reduce inflammation in the body.
- Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce lung inflammation, and also can repair tissue damage in the airways that happens after repeated asthma episodes. Look for omega-3 fatty acids in foods like salmon and mackerel.
- Selenium is a trace element that helps reduce inflammation in the lungs. Only a small amount is needed to receive benefit. Look for selenium in foods like Brazil nuts, chicken and seafood.
- Magnesium-rich foods include oysters, spinach, mackerel and halibut. Magnesium reduces inflammation in the body, along with smoothing the airways in the lungs, allowing air to pass through more easily.
