Lens Envy - A Sad Story About Someone Else"s Canon 100-400mm Lens

Canon 100-400mm Lens - Telephoto Lens For Serious Photographers

Ever get green with envy? I really do, particularly when talking of my digital camera gear. I am drooling over the Canon 100-400mm lens right now. Tomorrow, who knows. But one particular point is for sure, it's going to be something.

But I seriously need to declare the fact that the Canon 100-400mm lens has been on my personal hit list for ages. I've got some really good lenses, though. Actually, I own a Canon 70-200mm f4, and that is almost certainly my finest lens.

Some of the factors the Canon 100-400mm lens is at the top of the list to be my future buy:

1. The zoom range is exactly perfect for my demands. I photograph lots of bird pictures, and at this time I must think of creative ways to get closer. The zoom to 400mm will be a lot better than the 200mm I currently have. Furthermore, whenever you place this particular lens upon any camera which has a APS-C sensor, such as a Digital rebel or 50D, you will get 1.6x the declared focal length (680mm). Now that is really great.

2. It's an L series lens. Which is Canon's highest quality lens class. You will enjoy better picture quality, much better engineering, and other individuals looking and appreciating your equipment (see the tale down below).

3. Nature Photography needs a lens such as this. If you cannot afford the prime lenses at 400 or 500mm, this lens may be the next most suitable choice. I already mentioned taking pictures of birds, but most natural creatures are not going to wander up to you and say "cheese." You really have to have a lens that can reach them. And once you're trekking through the wilds of Alaska or just strolling through your local community, a telephoto lens with this length is what you will need.

So here's the story of my recent exposure to "lens envy."

I had been driving to work at just the right moment in the early morning for the sun to be perfect for a particular photo I had been considering. It is a horse farm and stable that's directly on the corner where I turn. There were a couple of stunning chestnut horses grazing in the field on a sloping hillside with a small barn in the foreground.

The horses were the precise photo I have been envisioning. So I pulled off the street right after turning the corner. Took out the Canon 30D from the carrier and connected my 70-200mm zoom lens to it. I proceeded to cross the road and take up my position close to the fence. I snapped a few photos and shifted in order to take a few more. I checked the rear monitor to see how the shots were turning out.

I was a bit disappointed that I was so far away from the hillside. I would have to do some cropping after I got the photos uploaded to my computer.

At that point I heard something to my left and glanced over to see another guy doing exactly what I was doing. I noticed the familiar color of a Canon telephoto L lens. It was the Canon 100-400, and I began to get that sick feeling in my stomach.. perhaps you know the one I'm speaking of? It's the one associated with jealousy.

In spite of my feelings about his lens, I had no ill feelings about him so I began a conversation, and he mentioned that my presence there had inspired him to stop and take some photos. We spoke for a few minutes, and upon parting, he gave me the name of a website where I could view the images he had shot of the horses.

Of course, I couldn't wait to see those shots, and when I did, it merely renewed my feelings of intense desire for that lens. Someday very soon, I'm sure that I will be opening a package that contains a Canon 100-400mm lens, perhaps it will be on some special occasion like my birthday or April 5th (the date is insignificant - any day will do). I have been dropping hints that my wife will pick up on, like writing this article.
