- 1). Obtain a reference photo of a palm tree. The photo can be from any angle and in any setting, but it should reflect the way you want your palm tree drawing to look. Consult the Internet or reference books about palm trees to find the right image for your drawing.
- 2). Hold your pencil loosely and begin to sketch the trunk from the ground up. Most palm trees have a curved trunk body made up of different segments of wood. Begin by lightly sketching the outline of the trunk only, saving the segment details for later.
- 3). Observe how the branches of the palm tree come out of the trunk and begin to draw them lightly so that the drawing replicates your reference photo. Use a single light line to draw the branches and as a reference for where to place your leaves.
- 4). Draw the leaves of the palm tree onto the palm tree branch. The leaves can be drawn using light, slightly curved pencil strokes to simulate their shape. They come out of both sides of the branch.
- 5). Finish the tree drawing by finalizing the sketch using heavier pencil lines and filling in the detail segments on the trunk, leaves and branches. Erase any excess lines used for sketching. Color in the trees using yellow-green, green and brown colored pencils or crayons.
