Costa del Sol, Costa Dorada or Costa Brava Holidays: How to Choose Which ‘Costa’ Is Right For Yo

There are over a dozen €Costas' that make up the coastline of Spain, though the most common are Costa Brava, Costa Dorada and Costa del Sol, which cover the most well-liked haunts along the Spanish coastline. Here are some of the highlights of each coastline to help you decide whether you would be best off booking Costa Brava holidays or heading a bit further south to the Costa del Sol.

The Costa Brava is the stretch of coastline that begins at the French and Spanish border on the Mediterranean coast and extends downwards to the town of Blanes, just about an hour north of Barcelona. Whilst Costa Brava has become increasingly popular with tourists, it is still regarded as one of the most rugged and naturally beautiful coastlines in Spain. Also, Costa Brava boasts diverse landscape with the Pyrenees Mountains providing a magnificent backdrop to this beautiful region of Spain as well as making it a year round destination for both winter and summer activities. Those on Costa Brava holidays will have the choice of exploring the unspoilt beaches and rocky gorges as well as scenic walks in the mountain €" a true nature lovers dream. The bigger towns of Costa Brava are found more inland and can easily be missed, but those who visit Gerona will be pleasantly surprised by the stunning hillside scenery or Figueres to see some of the most eccentric work of artist, Salvador Dali.

A bit further south from Barcelona lays Costa Dorada, with sparkling shores. Costa Dorada literally means €Golden Coast€ referring to its smooth golden beaches and less rugged landscape than Costa Brava. Costa Dorada is primarily made up of several small villages and quaint resort towns. It is an ideal part of Spain for families especially as there are a number of activities and festivals geared specifically towards children. In February, Festes de la Candelera in Reus is a street parade and festival for youth of all ages. In April, there are the holy week processions and at the end of June, everyone celebrates the festival of St John with bonfires and fireworks. In addition to the various festivals that take place throughout the year, Costa Dorada also boasts the exhilarating Port Aventura theme park by Salou as well as Aquopolis Water Park at La Pineda which is a big hit, especially for those on Costa Dorada holidays in the hot summer months.

Arguably the most popular tourist destination of the three €Costa's' for both families and singles is Costa del Sol and it is easy enough to see why with some of the most stunning beaches along the coastline, endless activities and theme parks, as well as a phenomenal nightlife. Marbella and Malaga are the two most visited places on the Costa del Sol and the nightlife here is not for the early birds. Most bars don't really get going much before 11pm, and some clubs do not even open until 1 or 2am with party-goers staying on until the sunrises. Even those more interested in enjoying the theme parks will find that many of the most popular ones like Tivoli World stay open until 2am in high season!

So, whether you choose to go on Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, or Costa del Sol holidays, you are sure to find one that suits your personality and your holiday priorities.
