- 1). Find the exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Japanese yen. Depending on the money transfer agency, the recipient might get the money in Japanese yen. If the transaction is not urgent, consider waiting for a favorable exchange rate before sending the money. As of Aug. 5, 2010, US$1 gets you ¥86.
- 2). Find money transfer agencies that have branches in Tokyo. Choose a reputable agency with a good USD/JPY exchange rate and low fees, such as Western Union or MoneyGram.
- 3). Visit a local branch with your personal identification and the money. Some agencies also allow you to do the transaction online or over the telephone.
- 4). Complete a money transfer form, which usually asks for details such as your name, address and phone number. Give the form back to the agent and provide him with the money you want to send and any applicable fees. The agency will need to identify the recipient, so he might give you a reference number to pass to the recipient or ask for the recipient's personal details, such as name and address.
