- From small parakeets to the largest macaws, more than 350 species of parrot exist. Budgies and parakeets come from Australia. The Senegal parrot and sun conure are larger birds with brilliant coloration. Blue and gold macaws hail from tropical Mexico, Central and South America. They are the largest parrots and some are endangered.
- The website CKC Birds suggests these foods for parrots: seeds, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, brown rice, nuts, vegetables and meat. Also feed them bird feed. Never feed a parrot chocolate, avocado or mushroom.
- In the wild and in home gardens, parrots seek and eat bananas. If banana plants are treated with chemicals, this can present a hazard. Homeowners sometimes protect bananas from parrots with traps or a gun. Other than that, banana plants provide good cover and the fruit is healthful for parrots, with potassium and vitamins A, B6 and C.
