The bachelor of education (BEd) degree allows students to attain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as part of their undergraduate degree. It usually takes two to four years to complete this degree as a full-time student, or four to six years when attending part-time. A student may earn the BEd in less time if he receives credit for previous undergraduate studies. - A student may take another route to achieving Qualified Teacher Status while working toward an undergraduate degree. This option allows a student to complete a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree and simultaneously take the training courses required for QTS. As with the BEd, the student is qualified to begin teaching upon graduation from the degree program.

A person who decides to become a teacher after earning an undergraduate degree may attain Qualified Teacher Status through post-graduate teacher training. One way to accomplish this is to pursue a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This program, which focuses on developing teaching skills, takes one year of full-time study, or up to two years part-time. Prospective teachers typically apply through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry, and must have earned an undergraduate degree from a United Kingdom college or university, or from an approved equivalent. - Another program available to college graduates is School-Centered Initial Teacher Training, or SCITT. In this program, which also requires an undergraduate degree from a United Kingdom school or a qualified equivalent, the teacher in training takes courses at one school (the "lead school") and simultaneously practices teaching at participating nearby schools.

The Graduate Teacher Program (GTP), through the Training and Development Agency for Schools, allows aspiring teachers to earn Qualified Teacher Status. In this personalized program, a student works for a school, which pays the teacher trainee a modest salary during the one-year program. After earning the QTS certificate, the student typically seeks teaching employment elsewhere.
