How to Trim and Install Shop Carpet

    • 1). Lay down carpet padding on the floor. Connect the seams in the padding with duct tape.

    • 2). Roll carpet out on top of the padding. Ask a partner to help you. Cut the carpet to loosely fit the room. Use a utility knife to trim around corners and doorways.

    • 3). Connect the carpeting to the tack strip along the edge of the wall. Place a stair chisel in the corner between the tack strip and the wall. Tap the end of the chisel with a hammer. This will press the carpeting into place so that it can be trimmed.

    • 4). Remove the excess carpet along the walls with a double-bladed wall trimmer. Run the trimmer along the wall to cut the carpet.

    • 5). Finish stretching the carpet with a knee kicker and power stretcher.
