Admission Requirements

Most online paramedic-to-RN bridge programs are designed specifically for individuals with significant background in the health-care industry. Being a paramedic, licensed vocational/licensed practical nurses or other professionals with experience in a clinical environment is the main criteria for admission into one of these programs. Along with their official transcripts, candidates must typically include their current license or certification to verify their professional status within the health-care field.

Paramedics training for the RN position will utilize skill sets they have already attained on the job, while learning new ones required for their new role within the health-care field. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the median hourly wages for paramedics in 2008 was roughly $14.10. For that same year, the median annual wages for a registered nurse was about $62,450. By earning an RN license through an online bridge program, paramedics can expect a significant increase in yearly earnings along with additional benefits like flexible work schedules, child care and educational benefits to help further advance their career with higher credentials like a master's degree.

According to the BLS, the job outlook for registered nurses is expected to be excellent, with RN employment growing much faster than average. Most of these job opportunities arise from the need to replace experienced nurses retiring from the occupation. A growth in RN employment of roughly 22 percent from 2008 to 2018 is also expected due to a greater number of health problems to be treated through technological advances.
