About Playa Blanca

    Background

    • Once just a fishing village with a busy port where tourists could catch a ferry to neighboring island Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca was not a tourist attraction until the early 2000s. Therefore, Playa Blanca is not as overdeveloped as other resorts on the island. According to Lazarote Guidebook, Playa Blanca is more upmarket than many of its competitors to the north of the island. In 2009, golf courses were also being planned for construction.

    Beaches

    • Playa Blanca is famous for its beaches, which form bays and are popular for sunbathing and swimming. The main beach, called Playa Blanca, is only about 100 meters but does have a European Blue Flag (top-rated award given to European beaches) for its cleanliness, and this is where most of the resort's tourists head. Another blue-flagged beach is the neighboring Playa Dorada, while another, Playa Papagayo, is a sheltered bay surrounded by imposing cliffs.

    Nightlife

    • Playa Blanca is geared toward relaxing holidays for families and couples rather than for young party-goers. The resort has many bars and restaurants and several discos, but you won't find all-night bars and nightclubs like those in Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise.

    Dining

    • Along the promenade of Playa Blanca is the harbor and the beach, along with a host of restaurants and cafes. Cuisine covers a wide range, from Chinese and Indian, to Italian and local Spanish food. Some of these restaurants only accept cash. For upmarket restaurants, head to the five-star Marina Rubicon.

    Weather

    • The Canary Islands are called the "lands of eternal spring" because of their weather. This means sunshine and temperatures that don't drop below an average of 64 degrees F from January to December. The hottest months are from July to September, when temperatures average around the high 80s. A good time to come is after the rains of January and February when the flowers on the island start to bloom.
