Varieties of Teak Deep Seating Cushions

One of the things that define and brighten up teak deep seating are its colorful cushions. These plush luxuries come in a number of different materials, as well as an endless palette of color and pattern. They do however all have a few characteristics in common with one another. For starters, all outdoor teak deep seating cushions should be, without exception, waterproof. They should also be resistant to fading, tearing, spills and mildew. Many are made with trademarked materials, like Sunbrella fabrics. Another thing to consider about cushions is that they should always be comfortable. You purchased them for your set in order to have a softer seat than sitting directly on the unforgiving wood, so if your cushions aren't comfortable, forget about them. With varying amounts of padding, some cushions can be up to 8 inches thick. And cushions are notjust for chairs alone: add them to loungers, ottomans, gliders, teak deep seating sofas and more for the ultimate in relaxation.

On the inside, most cushions are filled with foam and polyester. These materials are soft but also waterproof, malleable and will not fall flat. There are also two basic edge construction designs for the cushions. For one, a boxed edge is where two seams connect the bottom and top cushions panels, with another piece of fabric material between them. Secondly, the waterfall edge is a single seam connecting both cushions panels together. There's not much difference between them, and it really does not affect the look of teak deep seating one way or another.

Some of the various materials for the outside of cushions include the following:

Woven:

Woven threads is a vague term, but our purposes it's different than other materials in that they present a pattern by weaving different colored threads together instead of a solid fabric which has a pattern screen printed on top of it. Woven cushions are specifically for outdoor use, and their feel reflects it. With a slightly bumpy texture, sometimes woven thread can be rough. However, it also offers a loose weave construction for breathability and keeping the fabric cool. Detergents and pre-laundry solutions are good for cleaning stubborn stains, but make sure to keep any lotions or oily substances away from the cushions.

PVC:

PVC is made from a polyester core covered with colored PVC and then woven into fabric. On the one hand, this outdoor material is extremely durable and will hold up under heat, stain, sun exposure and abrasion. On the other hand, it's a much stiffer material, whose smooth plastic touch mimics more plastic outdoor furniture rather than the comfort of indoor furniture. At the same time, this makes it really easy to clean because you can be a little rougher on it. Household cleaners, rubbing alcohol and diluted bleach can be applied and then rinsed off with a hose. As a warning, suntan lotion and other oily substances exposed to PVC teak deep seating cushions will cause the material to break down faster, so make sure to wipe off any that has come in contact with it.

Olefin:

Olefin is a solution dyed fiber that's woven together and will retain its bright color for years. This material is much softer than woven, reminiscent of soft cloth or canvas, while still managing to be resistant to stains, mildew and fading. Open weave construction keeps it cool, while mild detergents, soap and warm water and bleach solutions will keep it looking clean.

Marquesa Blend:

Marquesa blends together PVC and Olefin for a combination of stiff and soft that ends up feeling much like the bumpy woven thread cushions. Marquesa is durable, antimicrobial, resistant to stains and fading, and overall good for industrial and commercial use. Periodically cleaning Marquesa helps to protect against mildew formation. Warm water, as well as detergents and chlorine and bleach solutions will take of mild to severe stains.
