- A learner's permit is often available around the age of 14, depending on your state. It grants you the privilege to drive a vehicle with a parent, and sometimes another adult 25 or older, while you learn to drive.
- Most states legally require some form of car insurance (typically liability coverage) for licensed drivers. When you obtain your license by completing driver's education and meeting state eligibility requirements, you must be added to your parent's policy, or given one for yourself.
- It is always advisable to check with your insurance agent to be sure your state and provider concur that you are covered by your parent's policy with a permit. When you do need to be insured, many parents opt to add a safe, lower value auto to their policy and assign it to the teen, if possible. This can keep premiums lower.
