- 1). Find the correct name for the policy law. For example, if the title of the law is "Policy of 1994: Homosexuality in the Armed Forces," your citation would begin as: "Homosexuality in the Armed Forces Policy (1994)."
- 2). Locate the United States Code (U.S.C.) and section number of the code. The U.S.C will begin with a number followed by the letters "USC" and the chapter will start with the symbol "§.'
- 3). Write out the policy law title, followed by the United States Code, section number and the year of the ruling or chapter edition. Taking the example from Step 1, the final code format should read:
"Homosexuality in the Armed Forces Policy, 10 U.S.C. § 654 (1994)"
