- There are a number of things you can do with paint to spruce up your kitchen cabinets. You can simply sand and paint over a color you don't like with something more trendy and current. Or you can choose a distressed look for your cabinets. A distressed look is easy to obtain by sanding, painting and then lightly "scrubbing" the newly painted surface with steel wool.
If you don't like the look of painted cabinets you may like changing the color with a new hue of stain. If your cabinet doors include a frame plus a face--the framed part of the door--you can add depth by staining the frame in a darker color. This is a classy look to suit almost any style of kitchen. - This look works best in country or farmhouse-style kitchens and only with framed cabinet door styles described in the first section. Consider removing the face of the cabinet door and replacing it with wire mesh. This material can be purchased at most hardware stores. Attach it to the inside of the frame. You can leave it in the original gray or have fun painting it electric blue, barn red or white to make your cabinets pop.
A similar material you can use is commonly called chicken wire. You can find it under hex netting and, true to its name, it is wire that is usually formed into one-inch hexagonal shapes. You can choose a galvanized or vinyl coating and buy it for under $20 a roll. This type of material provides opportunity for more decoration with items such as dried flowers and herbs since items can be hung or inserted easily in the openings. - Refacing your kitchen cabinets with glass creates a lovely look. Your options with glass are virtually endless. Use clear glass to show off your fine china. Smoky glass provides a modern touch. For something really unique, use stained glass to highlight your personality. The glass can be stained with colorful flowers, landscape scenes, fruit or geometric shapes. There is no wrong way to do it.
